This was our 2nd attempt at the Jonkershoek Panoramic Hike and at least the weather played it’s part. This nature reserve is home to the majestic Jonkershoek Mountains and parts of the Jonkershoek valley. The reserve, lies near the town of Stellenbosch. We decided to only go up to the Bergriver lookout point, which has amazing views of Assegaaiboskloof as we were going up very slowly and would not have time to do the full 17 km circular trail but we will definitely be going back again 🙂
This scenic trail has a steep climb up to a contour path just below the Banhoek peaks and then another uphill to the Bergriver lookout point. We were rewarded with incredible panoramic views over the entire Jonkershoek valley and perfect weather. It was cold in the wind but otherwise perfect for photo’s.
Going down is faster but not much easier on the knees. I just love the way the sun changes the view with the different shadows.
This is a tough hike but if you are reasonably fit and are prepared to walk for eight hours then I would recommend doing the full circular hike.
